Mammogram
New Digtal Mammography Coming
Soon...
What is a Mammogram?
A mammogram is an x-ray procedure of the breast. It
is thought by many to be the most valuable tool in detecting breast abnormalities
and disease.
Why was I sent for this procedure?
The American Medical Association (AMA) recommends that
women aged 40 and older get annual mammograms, however, the National Cancer
Institute (NCI) recommends women who are at increased risk, get mammograms
beginning at an earlier age. Between the ages of 35 and 40 a woman should
have a baseline mammogram. Between the ages of 45 and 50 a woman should
have a mammogram once every two years and after the age of 50 a woman
should have one every year. These mammograms are referred to as screening
mammograms and they can assist your physician in the early detection of
disease, even if you have no symptoms. If you already have been diagnosed
with breast disease your physician will use your mammogram as an aid in
treatment recommendations for your disease.
How does it work?
The mammography machine is an x-ray unit designed specifically
for breast x-rays. The patient stands in front of the machine which has
a platform upon which the breast is positioned. Another part of the machine
is a compression device which lowers onto the breast. This compresses
the patient’s breast to a uniform
thickness, thereby allowing a good quality film to be produced. A certified
technician will then x-ray your breast with a small dose of radiation.
This produces an image of the internal breast tissue.
What will I experience?
You will be asked to remove everything from the waist
up and be given a special gown to wear. You will be escorted into the
mammography suite and your procedure will begin. During your mammogram
you may feel discomfort when your breast is compressed. This only lasts
a few seconds for each x-ray. While uncomfortable, it is necessary to
ensure an accurate study.
Are x-rays dangerous?
The small amount of radiation used in mammography is
believed to be safe.
Preparing for your procedure
You may eat normally the day of your exam. You will
be asked to remove your clothes from the waist up so you may wish to wear
a two piece outfit. Do not apply any deodorant, powder or cream the day
of your exam. If you experience increased breast tenderness prior to menstruation,
you should not schedule your exam at that time to minimize discomfort.
After the test
You may resume your normal activities.
