Dexascan
What is a Dexascan?
DEXA stands for Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry. This
scan is a test to assess your bone mineral density.
Why was I sent for this procedure?
Patients are referred for this test by their physician
to detect the presence of osteoporosis or monitor bone density to predict
future bone fracture risk. It is a useful tool for those women contemplating
hormone replacement therapy at menopause. Men and women with certain risk
factors can be referred for this test. The risks include history of bone
fracture, advanced age, removal of the ovaries, early menopause, the use
of certain medications such as steroids, a low calcium diet and lack of
exercise. This is a safe procedure which assists your doctor in evaluating
bone loss.
How does it work?
Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry works by measuring
the amount of x-rays that are absorbed by the bones in your body. You
will be asked to lie down, without moving on the
examination scan table. A certified tech will then have the DEXA scanner
pass over one part of your body such as a wrist or hip. The scanner will
then pass over a second part of your body, a different part than the first.
The two x-rays allow the machine to differentiate between bone and soft
tissue, which then, can give a very accurate estimation of your bone density.
What will I experience?
X-rays are painless, therefore you will not feel
any discomfort during the procedure. This procedure takes about 20 minutes.
Are x-rays dangerous?
The x-ray dose from your DEXA scan is only about 1/10th
of that received from other x-rays. It’s about equivalent to the
naturally occurring radiation you are exposed to in a week. It is a very
safe test.
Preparing for your procedure
Wear comfortable clothes. You can eat normally
on the day of your exam. Do not take any calcium supplements for 24 hours
prior to the procedure, but a multi-vitamin is fine. Do not schedule this
test if you have had, or are going to have any contrast studies for one
week prior to your DEXA scan.
After the test
You may resume your normal activities.
